Cordia Blackswan prides itself on going beyond the red line, restoring iconic landmarks and unutilised areas of Birmingham and beyond. The Gothic is the first project in the Great Hampton Street Masterplan, and phase one has now completed.

Located at 1-4 Great Hampton Street, this 0.5-acre site comprises 14 bespoke apartments and duplexes in one-, two- and three-bedroom layouts.

Phase one of The Gothic is just one part of Cordia Blackswan’s ambitious vision, with 36 more apartments planned for this unique development, spread across three distinct phases. Cordia Blackswan has now obtained an occupancy permit for phase one and the first residents at The Gothic have now moved in.

Residents can now experience The Gothic in all its glory, from its authentic Victorian features and traditional cornicing to the building’s original beams and restored windows. While Cordia Blackswan has thoughtfully retained The Gothic’s unique character, the development benefits from the latest fixtures and fittings.

Crafting The Gothic to meet the demands of the modern resident was – and remains – at the forefront of Cordia Blackswan’s ethos. To ensure The Gothic met modern living standards, Cordia Blackswan worked closely with the Conservation Officer at Birmingham City Council and a specialist joinery company in the Black Country to install like-for-like windows throughout. Phase one of the development comprises four buildings, which have all been fitted with new windows to improve the thermal and acoustic performance of the building.

As well as original interior features, the exterior of The Gothic has also been restored. With its iconic turret and traditional Gothic-style facade, the Cordia Blackswan team has worked with professionals across the industry to return the building to its former glory. Specifically, the team worked alongside Edgbaston-based stone masons, William Parratt, to peel away almost a century’s worth of paint in order to reveal the original brickwork underneath.

The Gothic has long been a cornerstone in the Jewellery Quarter community, housing The Gothic Inn, The Gothic Stores and many more. During this time, the ground floor facades were painted in various different features, covering iconic features that date back as far as 1870.

Cordia Blackswan CEO, Marcus Hawley, commented: “It is great to see our long-awaited vision for The Gothic come to life, with works now complete on phase one. The creation of 14 elegant and unique apartments will meet the needs of modern residents who are looking for quirky high-quality living space in a prime city location.

“The offering at The Gothic does not stop at residential, we’re pleased to be creating commercial spaces to let to local independent businesses to support the community and encourage investment back into Great Hampton Street. The Gothic forms a key part of our vision for the transformation of the street, to act as a local social hub in years to come.”

The Gothic was recently awarded Apartment Development of the Year at Insider’s Midlands Residential Property Awards.
